4 DiggsLive Odds and Scores Tristan Wootton reports back after a memorable trip to Milan, after seeing his beloved Auxerre lose 2-0 to AC at the San Siro.
A few hours before AC Milan v Auxerre kicked off at the San Siro yesterday evening, I tweeted that The market value of Auxerres starting XI is just 13.6M, compared with ACs 152M. They say money cant buy you success but it can buy you Zlatan. Well the player that some like to call Ibracadabra ended up being the difference between the two sides after a compelling 90 minutes of football.
The trip began at midnight on Tuesday as fans gathered in the car park of the municipal swimming pool. A few let off flares as match tickets were handed out by the organisers of the dplacement. Soon after I checked out which bus I had been allocated, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I had bus No. 1 with the battle-hardened fans.
We soon got onto the A6 motorway and the drinking really began, as bottles of pastis*, whiskey and ros were opened left, right and centre. All fairly foul stuff, pour faire chauffer les gars. I got very limited sleep on the journey, but enjoyed meeting a few new faces who were fascinated to learn why story (at least I thought they were).
Every so often there was cause for further chanting and celebrating. None of which was football-related. Picking up more fans in Avallon and Beaune, filling the bus up with petrol, cigarette breaks, getting the first glimpse of the snow-capped Alps, going through the Mont Blanc tunnel and who knew the most insults in Italian these are the things that make such journeys bearable. The best insult I heard was Tutti frutti pezzo di merda! Quite how that translates Im not sure.
We gathered together in Milan at about 10am near the Lotto Fiera metro station and bought some 300 return tickets to the city centre, and got fairly rowdy on the train. The morning commuters were far from impressed by the Burgundian invasion, which soon moved on to the Piazza del Duomo.
The afternoon was free for us to do whatever we wanted, which basically meant drinking, eating and shopping (in that order). With pints costing around 10, I decided to invest in a copy of LEquipe and eat a rather soggy Cotoletta alla milanese.
We regrouped a 5.30pm in front of the towering cathedral for the mandatory group photos with the Ultras Auxerre banner. The flares that went with the photo shoot were possibly not as mandatory as the local police decided to disrupt our travelling pans to the San Siro. We were escorted onto our own very own metro to take us back to the Lotto station, from where we were crammed into special cages buses to take us to the stadium. Sounds like an ordeal but it saved walking and the atmosphere on the metro was electric. It was quite literally rocking.
As for the match itself, seeing our boys line up to the Champions League hymn was pretty emotional, despite being several stories up in the stadium. With two shots on target in the first five minutes, some of us dared to believe, but after Coulibaly hit the bar with a header (23) and Langil spurned a fantastic chance (39), you couldnt help but feel that we had missed the boat. A bloody excellent boat at that.
The hosts justified 2/5 favouritism with two well-taken goals by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but arguably the star of the show was Ronaldinho, who is just as good as Messi when hes on song.
We left the San Siro with mixed feelings, but the prevailing one was pride. Our players will learn from the experience, as they just werent physical enough in the middle of the park. For an hour we were equal to AC, which is pretty cool seeing as we are 17th in the domestic league. The Auxerre players played out of their skin, and 22-year-old Steeven Langil (yes it is spelled like that) is clearly going places, and will play for France in the next decade
As for the betting, Auxerre are now out to 7/1 to qualify, but we will just be looking to get results off Ajax. In the first goalscorer markets, Ill be keeping both Coulibaly and Hengbart on my side, who are usually 50/1 and 25/1 respectively.
Im glad that Marseille lost at home to Spartak, and you can follow my next trip to Amsterdam here on Live Odds and Scores on 19 October.
