154 DiggsThe Red Sox are in a pickle. Inter-league play, usually a period when Boston piles up wins, has been a trial, as the team’s record in late June reflects. Philadelphia’s Cliff Lee shut out the Sox on June 28, giving him 32 straight scoreless innings, while Josh Beckett had a sub-par outing. Something has to give, since Boston’s problems won’t be fixed when they get back to the AL, where David Ortiz can log his four or five at-bats a game. 2011 will be a seller’s market before the July 31st trade deadline, and Boston has a lot of needs to fill. Internally, however, there are a few options. A combination of savvy acquisitions and timely call-ups will be the difference between a shot in October and a third-place finish. Read story

209 DiggsLAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Red Sox shocked the baseball world, or at least the portion of it that managed to hold on to their drinks around the lobby bars of the winter meetings hotel here when the news broke in the last hour of Wednesday. Boston somehow turned $142 million into stealth money, agreeing to make Carl Crawford the second-highest paid outfielder in baseball history with hardly a moment of preparation by those outside their own suite. It was a rare "wow" moment in a Twitter-mad world. Read story

114 DiggsAt 79, his hair is whiter than ever, he walks slower, and he's not as sharp as he once was. He also doesn't think he's tough. Williams managed fellow inductee Goose Gossage in San Diego in 1984. He has always understood the great impact he had on Red Sox baseball, but in his speech he failed to point out he was enshrined as an Oakland Athletic Read story
